We take great care in sourcing the best materials we can get our hands on and order direct from some of the best tanneries in the world. We settle for nothing short of top-of-the-line.
Vegetable Tanned Leather (Veg Tan, Bark Tan) - Refers to leather that has been tanned using tannin and other ingredients found in tree bark and other vegetable matter. This method of tanning has been in existence for thousands of years. The leather will age in color dramatically, specific to it's owner's use. This makes for a very personal product that will evolve along with you. Veg tan leather darkens with exposure to sun, natural oils (animal oils applied to condition, oil from your hands, etc), and water.
Pull-up Leather (Chromexcel) - Pull-up leather refers to the temporary separation of oils and dyes in leather when creased, stretched, or pulled up on. This results in a beautiful texture in color. All our pull-up leather is Horween's exclusive Chromexcel, richly touted as an incredibly beautiful, supple, and well-aging leather. From Horween:
"Chromexcel is the original pull-up leather; using time honored techniques and formulas that were developed nearly 100 years ago. Chromexcel is still produced in the United States using a bark retannage from a proprietary recipe, and then genuine hot stuffed with our secret blend of natural oils and greases.
Chromexcel is characterized by a rich pull-up in full aniline, hand rubbed finishes. Made to this day with old world craftsmanship, modern Chromexcel carries on a long history of superior comfort and durability."
Well-conditioned leather is happy leather—happy leather can last you a lifetime. Leather that is left untreated will eventually dry out and become brittle. We strongly encourage you to treat your leather once every several months or whenever you notice it starting to dehydrate. Some recommended products:
For Chromexcel, neatsfoot oil is what Horween recommends, as a coat of neatsfoot oil is what what they use to finish off the tanning process. To rebuff or to bring back some luster and shine, you can simply use a neutral shoe polish—dampen leather, apply polish and buff.
Take care of your leather and it will repay you with years of faithful service.
